Relation – On Empathy, Roots and Heart
At first glance you see a word: Refugee. A word so often laden with negativity in our society that we forget what, or who, lies behind it.
But open it up.
Behind it hides a mother who stays awake at night so her children can sleep. A father who left everything behind so his family could have a chance. A daughter who, at seven years old, didn't understand why she had to leave or when she would return. A son, a sister, a brother. A person who loves, who cares, who works, who dreams, who plays, who laughs, who cries. A caregiver. An actress. Someone's entire life. A person with a story that runs deeper.
The green of the zirconia, the color of hope. The hope that someday we will stop staying on the surface.
The relation between what we see and what we don't see. Between the surface and the depth. How often do we judge without looking closer? How often do we see a person and believe we've understood them, that we know who they are? People are not headlines. People are not categories. People are stories — layered, complex, beautiful and broken at once. And every story deserves to be heard.
And now, from the perspective of a refugee: don't be ashamed of your roots. Your roots are not a flaw — they are your foundation, your strength, the home you carry within you, no matter where life takes you. Open your heart and cultivate empathy. Not as a gesture, but as a way of being.
Because when we truly look, and go deeper, we recognize: we are all one.
We are all human.
And that has always been enough.
