Between Identities

This piece was created as part of my diploma thesis titled "Mixed Identities: Between Arrival and Origin." The goal was to make visible, in a single object, my two identities and the in-between space I live in. The text I wrote in Bosnian is not immediately accessible to all viewers, yet it can be translated and applied to many people in similar life situations.

The self-cast beads contain two elements inside, each representing one of my identities: rock candy as a symbol of Viennese pastry culture, and salt crystals from my hometown of Tuzla. The object serves simultaneously as a memory and a reminder. It pauses, points to a rupture, and, upon closer inspection, invites engagement. It shows that multiple identities can and may coexist as equals.

Translation of the chain text: Between two cultures, arrival and origin, traces emerge. Inside, two worlds — not a contradiction, but a mosaic. Not an empty shell, but an abundance of colors. Experiences shape us, but we decide what we make of them. And one day, we begin to shine.

Material: Brass, Polymethylmethacrylate, Salt and Sugar Kristalls
